   This work describes a case study of the design of equipment to reduce styrene emissions from a filament winding and chop hoop mixed process from a factory that produces Reinforcing Plastic pipes.

Abstract

   The Fiber Glass Reinforcing Plastic Industry in Argentina has undergone a huge development. Unfortunately, only a few facilities work with appropriate abatement pollutant emission technology. That is so due to the lack of regulations and control laws in this country.

    This work describes a case study of the design of equipment to reduce styrene emissions from a filament winding and chop hoop mixed process from a factory that produces Reinforcing Plastic pipes. Data as consumptions of resin from the period of highest production and environment concentration of styrene, was used an alternative Emission Factor Method to estimate non-polymerized styrene. In addition, some Good Manufacturer Practics and a designed biofilter of attached bed were suggested.

   With the aim to improve using and maintenance of biofilter, also was estimated stable-run time using Ergun Equation and Critical Biomass Model. As conclusion was estimated changed-bed time of 16 months and was recommended a low-cost alternative of preventive maintenance.
