Analysis of odour episodes through dispersion modelling, field olfactometry and citizens’ complaints near a paper-mill

Valdenebro   The RAMS-CALMET-CALPUFF modelling system has been used to simulate the odorous impacts from a paper-mill in an urban area located several kilometres away in a coastal mountainous area.

   Over the last years, episodes of citizens complaints due to malodours have been registered, with a potential origin in several pollution sources located inside and outside the city. A selection of episodes under anticyclonic conditions, with poor ventilation in general and continuous changes of stability and wind during the day, has been simulated.

Management of odour episodes by means of social participation and retrotrajectory calculations

imagen ramos1   Nasapp is an odour episode management system through citizen participation. It allows to have a summary of situation in real time from any portable device or computer. In this paper we studied the advantages of incorporating the automatic calculation of trajectories models of air in each record made by volunteer citizens.

   The result is a substantial improvement in the visualization of complex problems, especially when there is diversity of odour sources. It was also verified the possibility of assigning causal percentages of odour episodes in each source, verifying meteorological and geographic influences, as well as validating the assignment of odour descriptors to known odour sources.

Effect of post-harvest season on the methane emissions in rice paddy fields in the Ebre Delta

imagen viñas1   Rice paddy fields are one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The project LIFE EBRO-ADMICLIM is evaluating the annual pattern of greenhouse emissions in rice paddy fields at the Ebro Delta.

   A monthly monitoring of the GHG emission rates in 15 rice fields covering the whole geophysical variability of the Ebro Delta under standard agronomic management was carried out, including both growth and post-harvest (fallow). In addition, hydrological and physico-chemical parameters of the soil and the vegetation cover were also studied.
