   Olfactometric techniques used in this work are to implement a questionnaire to citizens that could be affected by odours, and then take the values obtained to know odour intensity. On the other hand, they were measured for air quality by chemical analysis. The scope of this investigation was olfactometric measurements for a period of 18 months, as well as chemical analysis. Olfactometric measurement procedures were made using the German regulation VDI 3883 Part 1 and 2.

Abstract

   The aim of this study was to validate olfactometric measurements made in neighborhood of facilities that emit odours at the same time measure the impact on the nearby population before and after installation, and operation of equipment to mitigate odors.

   Olfactometry is a technique that involves exposing humans to smell, and the subsequent registration of the resulting sensations. Olfactometric techniques used in this work are to implement a questionnaire to citizens that could be affected by odours, and then take the values obtained to know odour intensity. On the other hand, were measured for air quality by chemical analysis. The scope of this investigation was olfactometric measurements for a period of 18 months, as well as chemical analysis. Olfactometric measurement procedures were made using the German regulation VDI 3883 Part 1 and 2.

   Comparisons of the two measurement techniques were performed by plotting the one hand, odour intensity perceived by the population in % and, on the other hand, Total Reduced Sulfur compounds (TRS) in parts per billion (ppb), measured in ambient air. Comparisons of odor intensity (%), were analyzed considering the same months of the year, in order to eliminate the variable weather.

   The main results show that there is a correlation between the amount of TRS in the air and the odour intensity perceived by people whom live in the neighborhood to industries that emit odors. On the other hand, it can be seen a significant decrease in odor intensity perceived by people, respect the period prior to the installation of new abatement technologies.
