Olores.org is aware of the multiple issues and questions of odour modellers every day. There is a wide-ranging discussion about CALPUFF modelling with special focus on:
- Complex terrain
- Coastal regions/ land-water boundaries
- Overwater transport
- Inhomogeneous dispersion conditions
- Stagnation (99% of odor complaints)
- Flow reversals
- Recirculation
- Subhourly data management.
- Selection of proper averaging times.
- Peak to mean factors.
Inscription is already complete for the CALPUFF course. However, you may send us an email, in case we have the chance to include more people.
Exponent’s Atmospheric Sciences staff has experience serving a wide range of industrial and government clients around the world. Their scientists and engineers have been influential in the evolution of air quality modelling, and have developed or contributed to five of the seven U.S. EPA models recommended in the Guideline on Air Quality Models. Most notable of these is the CALPUFF model, an advanced non-steady-state meteorological and air quality modelling system recommended by many regulatory agencies worldwide as the preferred model for assessing near-field complex meteorological conditions and long-range transport applications.
Joseph Scire, CCM is a Principal Scientist at Exponent and an author of the CALPUFF model (Scire et al., 2000). He will provide training on the CALPUFF modelling system. He has more than 35 years experience in the design, development, and application of research and regulatory air quality models. He has taught more than 80 training courses over the last 18 years on the CALPUFF model for government agencies, private industry, and universities around the world.
Jenny Barclay is an independent atmospheric scientist. With 21 years of experience in dispersion modelling, Jenny was part of the Atmospheric Sciences group that developed the CALPUFF model and she is expert in odour modelling with CALPUFF.
The program of the course is the following:

The course will take place at the facilities of Ecometrika in Av. Amèrico Vespucio 2296, El Cortijo. Conchalí, Santiago, Chile. The cost of this one-day course is €225 EUR (VAT excluded). To register to the course, please contact us. Please note that we reserve the right to cancel the course, in case there are not enough attendees. Shall this happen, we will refund the full cost of the course.
For this introductory course there is no need to buy expensive Graphical User Interface (GUI) or have special software requirements. At the end of the course you will have a working copy of the CALApps GUI for free for your use. You do not need to buy model software or pay for additional data for this course either.
Please note that although the CALApps GUI is provided free, it does depend on third party software (Surfer graphics software by Golden Software, Inc.) to produce vector and contour plots. Download a working demo of Surfer and see videos for training on this software. A licensed copy of Surfer is required for CALApps to produce graphics, but not to set up or run the CALPUFF modelling components.
