Abstract

In 2017 complaints of offensive odors were presented in the domestic wastewater treatment plant in a Colombian municipality. In order to mitigate the generation of gases which are odor´s precursor and seeking to reduce the perception of odors in the surrounding community, TQI was responsible for complementing the wastewater biological treatment with the application of biocatalytic technologies.

To quantify the efficiency of biocatalysts in the odor emission reduction, two dynamic olfactometry studies were considerate; the first one was made on January 27, 2016 before of the technology application, and the second one was made on December 3, 2017, when 2 months of application were carried through. In both studies, the odor emission rates of the different treatment stages were quantified, and afterwards, to perform an odor dispersion modeling. The results were compared previously, and it was possible to establish a considerable decrease in the concentration of odors emitted at each measured points up to 96%.

This case study allowed the unit of biodegradable technologies, dynamic olfactometry and modeling programs for pollutant´s dispersion in the air, and as a main objective, it allowed to improve environmental conditions for the residents of the municipality, demonstrating that the manage of the waste in an integral manner, minimizing the impact that is generated on the environment, urban centers and their population.
