Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in several industrial sectors are regulated by increasingly restrictive policies, requiring the implementation of control treatments. In recent years, we have been working on the scaling of the biotrickling filter (VOCUSTM) for its industrial application, and there are several companies in Europe that already use this technology to control their emissions.
This work compiles the results of the cases of implantation of this technology in various industrial sectors, with VOC of very different nature, from the very soluble ones such as the flexographic industry, to the cases of elimination of styrene emitted in the composite industry and mixtures of soluble and hydrophobic compounds typical of furniture or automobile coating industries.

Abstract
Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in several industrial sectors are regulated by increasingly restrictive policies, requiring the implementation of control treatments. In recent years, we have been working on the scaling of the biotrickling filter (VOCUSTM) for its industrial application, and there are several companies in Europe that already use this technology to control their emissions.
This work compiles the results of the cases of implantation of this technology in various industrial sectors, with VOC of very different nature, from the very soluble ones such as the flexographic industry, to the cases of elimination of styrene emitted in the composite industry and mixtures of soluble and hydrophobic compounds typical of furniture or automobile coating industries.
The systems were efficient and robust, with a good adaptation to the typical variations of industrial emissions, with their production shut-downs, emission peaks and allowing to comply with the established emission limits.
The operating costs of this type of system varied between 0.6 and 1.8 € per year for each Nm3 h-1 treated gaseous effluent, being much lower than those obtained by other conventional treatment alternatives, such as regenerative catalytic combustion. Investment costs are also often lower than those of most conventional alternatives. The lower environmental impact and the low needs in personnel and external assistance are also advantageous factors of this technology.
