Design of a Plan to Reduce the Impact of Offensive Smells at the raw material storage unit of a of soap factory

rincon   This document presents the information required by the Colombian environmental regulator as a requirement for a production system that has to do with the thermal treatment of animal by-products, specifically the tallow used for the production of solid soap of the company JABONES EL TIGRE Y LA ROCA S.A.

   For the elaboration of the study, an evaluative research methodology has been used with the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of the system of control of atmospheric emissions by absorption in water with the scrubber of the company. Initially, the obligations imposed by the national authorities are identified through the regulations defined by the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

Abstract

   This document presents the information required by Colombian legislation as a requirement for a production system that has to do with the thermal treatment of animal by-products, specifically the tallow used for the production of soap in bars of the company JABONES EL TIGRE Y LA ROCA SA

   For the elaboration of the study, an evaluative research methodology has been used with the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of the system of control of atmospheric emissions by absorption in water type scrubber of the company. Initially, the obligations imposed by the international and national authorities are identified through the regulations defined by the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

   They are then developed in the design of the Odour Management Plan (OMP) in the order required by the Environmental authority which is the following one:

  1. Presentation of the description of the economic activity and of the productive process, including the description of the area, taking into account the information of the meteorological station near the place of study, as well as the limitation of the problem generated by the Industrial Activity in the production of Ammonia and Sulfhídric Acid as offensive odors and the objectives sought with the present project.
  2. The location of the odor generating areas was shown, followed by a description of the suitability of the scrubber for the control of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. The results obtained from the characterization of the gases by the means of use of electrochemical detectors before and after washing, served to estimate the distribution factor, where the climatic condition and quantity of the production were taken into account. In order to estimate the emissions of H2S and NH3 of the scrubber, the emission factors of the AP-42 of the EPA were used. Afterwards, a gaussian screening model was used to evaluate the impact of the odorants in the population nearby.

   The OMP plan was finally ellaborated according to the schema proposed in the Resolution 1541 of 2013 and Resolution 2087 of 2014.
