Abstract

Odour generation is an inherent side product of waste water storage and treatment. Encroachment of developments in the proximity of sewage treatment works increases the risk of adverse odour impact on receptors. Quantification of individual odorous processes helps operators understand which aspects of their works may be responsible and offers opportunities to find solutions to problems that may exist. Three UK based sites are used as a case study to compare real world examples and these highlight that variations are expected from site to site. Results also demonstrate how routine odour control system testing can be used to proactively identify performance issues.
