Abstract

Ospina Grasas y Pieles Ltda, dedicated to the use of by-products of cattle farm near Medellin Colombia, has been impacting for the last 30 years the surrounding communities due to offensive odors. According to preventive measures imposed by the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, environmental authority responsible for verifying compliance with environmental standards in the area, the plant closure was ordered. The company implemented a Plan to decrease the Odor Impact with the draft of law standard, that then would become Resolution 1541 of 2013. This Plan regulates the issue of odors in the country, based on the European Norm EN13725. This plan implemented was assessed by olfactometry and gas studies performed by the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. The first mesuarement was conducted before the start of the plan in October 2011, then the environmental authority approved a three-month trial operation to verify that the implemented measures had effect on the Odor Impact in the area. A second study of olfactometry was performed in March 2012. The measurements were compared, and they concluded that the measures implemented to control odors were successful. This result led to the lifting of the preventive action and the reactivation of the productive process.
