IEEE2021   The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has launched a new open call for experts to participate in several new standards related to Olfaction Devices. The organization is asking for volunteers to contribute to three new standards that will have a strong focus on specific applications of these devices.

The IEEE is looking for volunteers for several roles. Volunteers with experience in IEEE standards development can join a sponsoring entity’s Standards Committee (IEEE Sensors Council and/or IEEE Industrial Electronics Society) which requires a commitment of about one hour per month (yearly appointments).

ASPIDI   This Thursday, November 26th, at 15:00 (CET), the first workshop of the ASPIDI project (Automatic System Supported by the Population for the Identification of Diseases by Smelling Immunities) will take place. The aim of the first workshop is to present the research objectives, the experimental methods and the first activities in progress at the AQP Monopoli Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The ASPIDI project was born to give a response to the need of the Puglia Water Authority (as the representative body of all the municipalities belonging to the Optimal Territorial Area) to have systems for monitoring and controlling in real time the odour emissions derived from treatment plants, aims to develop a prototype of a trained electronic nose capable of detecting unpleasant odours and sending the report in real time to a database that will update a web-gis platform that is easily accessible to citizens.

18meetingWG41  The 18th meeting of CEN/TC 264/WG 41 that is dealing with the new standard on Instrumental Odour Monitoring Systems (IOMS) took place last 28th of September. This was a short meeting to discuss some approaches for quality assurance and a call for volunteers to provide data to find out the best way to set a robust confidence interval for IOMSs.

After the last meeting discussions, it was clear that a plausibility check with real data was needed in order to test if the Chebyshev's inequality was appropriate as QAL1 procedure for IOMSs. Unfortunately, not enough data are available at this stage and no decision have been taken on this regard. The group is looking for more data on IOMS vs olfactometry tests to validate the statistical approach suggested, so anyone interested in contributing here may contact the task group leader to provide those data under a NDA.
