Valladolid hosted the 1st Workshop on Odour Characterization and Management in Wastewater Treatment plants in June 7-8th 2010. The event was coordinated by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology of Valladolid University and LEQUIA from the University of Gerona within the technical workshops organized under the frame of the project CONSOLIDER-NOVEDAR. The project CONSOLIDER-NOVEDAR is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation with the program INGENIO 2010 and is composed of 11 research groups (9 Spanish and 2 Dutch) and 29 water companies and environmental agencies (www.novedar.com).
The workshop, oriented to technical staff of R&D Department of Industries, Public Administrations and Research Centers, involved keynotes from experts on sensorial odour characterization (SGS), instrumental analysis (Ambiente Tecnología y Consultores), odour treatment (STA) and on wastewater treatment (Aqualia and Agbar, the latter via its technological center CETaqua) and experts from academia (University of Valladolid and University of Gerona). This technical and scientific workshop aimed at providing the state of the art of odour pollution in Spain consisted of theoretical keynotes of 45-60 minutes, real case studies, and a practical workshop on dynamic olfactometry (organized by SGS).
The event hosted 41 participants and 14 keynotes. This workshop constitutes the beginning in the organization of biannual workshops on odour measurement and treatment in Spain with the final goal of providing a forum for discussion with all parties involved in odour pollution.
