A new book on Odorous Emission Control: Monitoring and Abatement has recently been published. This book has been edited by Mr Marzio Invernizzi, an assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta" of the Politecnico di Milano University (POLIMI). This book is the most up-to-date compendium of the many tools available for odour management.

You probably know Marzio Invernizzi. He belongs to the prolific group of the Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI), which, in our opinion, is the largest university group in the world working on odour management, both in terms of people involved and in terms the number of publications per year in this field. Marzio has been working on POLIMI for quite some years now and is a regular at NOSE conferences, consistently delivering entertaining and interesting talks.

The latest update to the ASTM E544 standard has been published as ASTM E544-24, effective from 6 September 2024. This update revises the previous ASTM E544-18 standard, which was issued in 2018. The original ASTM E544 standard was first introduced in 1999.

ASTM E544-24 provides essential guidelines for referencing the odour intensities of odorants within the suprathreshold region, using the ASTM Odour Intensity Referencing Scale. The updated standard continues to outline two primary methods for this purpose:

The members of AMIGO proposed celebrating "Odour Day" in some way. However, the first question was: when should we celebrate it? Several dates were discussed, as there are already "Odour Days", for example in the USA, but the history behind them was not known. In the end, December 2nd was proposed as Odour Day, as the first meeting that led to the publication of EN 13725 took place on that day in 1991.

To celebrate Odour Day, we interviewed several leading professionals in the field.
