We are pleased to announce that we have opened the inscription period for the first course on CALPUFF modeling and ODORS ever made before. This specialist training course is being organized by Olores.org in collaboration with Exponent and will take place the 22-25 October 2013 in Madrid, Spain. The cost of the course is 990 Euro (VAT not included*).
This time Olores.org is organizing a course of CALPUFF modelling of odors together with the Principal Scientist of Exponent Inc, Joseph Scire and the independent odor modeling specialist Jennifer Barclay. This is the first course ever organized that links odors and CALPUFF modeling.
Book your place now!
Admission will solely be based on available number of vacant seats (20) and will be strictly on first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis.
Olores.org is aware of the multiple issues and doubts that affect to odor modelers every day. In the last IWA Odour and Air Emissions Conference of March 2013 in San Francisco there was a wide discussion about CALPUFF modeling with special focus on:
- Complex terrain
- Coastal regions/ land-water boundaries
- Overwater transport
- Inhomogeneous dispersion conditions
- Stagnation (99% of odor complaints)
- Flow reversals
- Recirculation
- Subhourly data management.
- Selection of proper averaging times.
- Peak to mean factors.
Exponent’s Atmospheric Sciences staff has experience serving a wide range of industrial and government clients around the world. Their scientists and engineers have been influential in the evolution of air quality modeling, and have developed or contributed to five of the seven U.S. EPA models recommended in the Guideline on Air Quality Models. Most notable of these is the CALPUFF model, an advanced non-steady-state meteorological and air quality modeling system recommended by the U.S. EPA and many regulatory agencies worldwide as the preferred model for assessing long-range transport of pollutants for near-field applications involving complex meteorological conditions.
Joseph Scire, CCM is a Principal Scientist at Exponent and an author of the CALPUFF model. He will provide training on the CALPUFF modeling system. He has more than 35 years experience in the design, development, and application of research and regulatory air quality models. He has taught more than 80 training courses over the last 18 years on the CALPUFF model for government agencies, private industry, and universities around the world.
Jenny Barclay is an independent atmospheric scientist hired by olores.org for this course. With 21 years of experience in dispersion modelling, Jenny was part of the Atmospheric Studies Group, developers of CALPUFF model and she is expert in odor modeling with CALPUFF.
This course will be divided into two parts. During the first three days in Part I, trainees will receive an advanced instruction on features of atmospheric pollution dispersion and the CALPUFF modeling system. The last day of the course (Part II) will focus on odors issues in the environment and the application of the model for this particular kind of pollution.

For this course there is no need to buy expensive graphical user interface (GUI) or have special software requirements. At the end of the course you will have a working copy of the CALApps GUI for free for your use. You do not need to buy any software or pay for additional data for this course either.
Please note that although the CALApps GUI is provided free, it does depend on third party software (Surfer graphics software by Golden Software, Inc.) to produce vector and contour plots. Download a working demo of Surfer and see videos for training on this software.
The course will be held in the MSL Formación training center facilities, located in Marqués de Ahumada St, 5 in Madrid, at times 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, October 22nd to 25th, 2013. End of Registration on the 15th of October 2013. Late registration available till 21st of October with a 10% increase of the normal registration fee.
Due to room constrains the registration is open for just 20 people. Book your place now!
