12th Meeting of the CEN Working Group 2 in Barcelona

WG2 lunch break in Barcelona   The 12th meeting of the working group 2 dealing with dynamic olfactometry just took place in Barcelona the 14th and 15th of February and again many decisions were taken that will affect the day by day work of the lab managers and other olfactometric facilities.

Mr Van Harreveld welcomed all participants to Barcelona and opened the meeting. The convenor remarked that CEN has implemented a new rule regarding the maximum duration of the preliminary stage of a project: 3 years. If a working group exceeds that time limit the project will automatically be abandoned. This rule will become effective in 2017 and has no retroactive effects.

That is why this 12th meeting was the last meeting for discussion and confirmation of the last results and topics generated by the task groups. Afterwards those results will be put in one revised EN 13725 to be presented for review during the next meeting that will take the place in Berlin the 28th to 29th of August. If necessary a final meeting provisionally scheduled for the beginning of 2018 will conclude the review of the revised EN 13725.

Several important topics were discussed and the text was corrected in many important points. Mr Rossi from the Italian company Progress srl explained a document with a procedure about how to take field blanks in the standard. Later, Mr Dominik Wildanger held a presentation about the results of the Proficiency Test involving stack sampling of odours carried out in Kassel the years 2015 and 2016.

Mr Sneath from Silsoe Odours commented about the open bag (wafting) method for sampling sources such as offices, inside buildings and in the open air. In addition, he started a discussion about several aspects of the predilution before sampling. For example, it was proposed to always check the predilution factor by means of for example a tracer gas in the bag (e.g O2).

Mr Mannebeck from Olfasense presented some comments and proposals from the German Mirror Committee regarding the latest version of EN 13725 (October 2016).

Ms Capelly from the University of Politecnico Milano explained the content of a document detailing the performance criteria for passive area source sampling hoods as proposed in the last meeting.

Some other discussions took place about panel size (not defined yet in the document). According to the minutes of the session the Dutch delegation wanted to increase the size, since the use of an increased number of panel members would decrease the uncertainty in the results. Other aspects discussed were the routine verification of the panel threshold, the number and order of presentations and the recovery rate of the olfactometer.

A very long list of actions is pending for the next meeting that will take place in Berlin the 28th to 29th of August of this year.
