In 2014 the residents of Kelsterbach suffered from an extreme annoyance due to odour impact in the residential areas. The nearby located WTP of the Stadtentwässerung Frankfurt was considered to be the source for the occurring odours.
The operators have invested millions in the last years to optimize the plant concerning odour emissions. In this case, it was called into question if the water water treatment plant was the only source. The platform “Odourmap” was used for this study.

Abstract
In 2014 the residents of Kelsterbach suffered from an extreme annoyance due to odour impact in the residential areas. The nearby located WTP of the Stadtentwässerung Frankfurt was considered to be the source for the occurring odours. The operators have invested around 15 million Euro in the last years to optimize the plant concerning odour emissions. In the case of this high annoyance level it was called into question if the water water treatment plant was the only source and which source might cause this high annoyance level. The analyses comprised the operation of an odour management platform “Odourmap”.

The management of odours caused by industrial emissions requires standarized and technically-proved methodologies for a correct diagnosis, allowing to assess the problem objectively and, therefore, for proposing the best solutions from an economical and technical point of view.
This study describes the odour and compounds formation in different industry sectors. Exposes methods for odour characterization and impact assessment, recommending dynamic olfactometry according to EN-13725 combined with high resolution chemical analysis, dispersion modelling or direct exposure measurements by field inspections (VDI3940).
