Abstract
Many Environmental Treatment and Valorisation Plants (ITVAs), as wastewater treatment plants, composting plants, biomethanisation plants,... and other often generate odoriferous emissions which if not treated properly can actually cause serious nuisance to neighbors.
Currently, there are advanced odour treatment technologies such as Advanced Biofiltration with Biological Advanced Filters (FBA) with inorganic support, Thermal Oxidation Systems and others (such as additional high dispersion systems, the Non-Thermal Plasma oxidation systems, ...) that allow a very efficient way to reduce the odor impact of an activity on the environment. Given the specific scope of each of these technologies its applicability is deduced after a detailed study of relevant cases that the emissions main characteristics (detailed composition,..) and other technical aspects of each technology.
This paper will show the results of three real cases in which the application of these advanced treatment systems has reduced very significantly the odor impact of three different processes: a MSW composting plant, a bio-digestion of MSW and finally a rendering plant. Among other things it will show the efficiency of deodorization and the characteristics of each of these technologies and a comparison of the benefits of these technologies against deodorization usually installed. The study of these cases will show that the problems of odor impact, even the most complex, can be perfectly solved through the application of advanced technologies, and in some cases, can have overall costs throughout its operational life even lower than other technologies that offer a lower technological profile.
