Abstract

The industrial activity of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) can be potentially odorous, causing important nuisances to the population living in the surroundings. Modern facilities are designed in order to avoid these problems, considering, for example, enclosed sources. In the older ones, as it occurs at WWTP Galindo, the main sources located into buildings are not enclosed, and there are large surfaces emitting directly to the atmosphere. Prevention of nuisances caused by odour emissions is mandatory for the Management of the facility. To fulfill this objective, odour diagnosis studies based on standarized methodologies are required to identify the main sources responsible of the odour nuisances and, therefore, where the efforts must be focused on. Based on the conclusions of several diagnosis studies, an action plan was developed including: installation of high performance biofilters, enclosure of sources, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies to improve the ventilation, settling tanks remodeling and improvement of the existing odour abatement systems. The final objective of this process is to prevent the nuisances to the population, to improve the working conditions of the operators, and to operate more efficiently the process. In conclusion, the plant and its operation, must evolve according to the society demands. Thus, the previously mentioned Action Plan and the corrective measures to be carried out are presented.
