Control of Odor Episodes at the Chemical Parks and Port of Tarragona

sesion06 ramos05   The aim of this work is to present a system to monitor odour incidents to detect odour sources in industrial areas that can cause an odour impact in residential neighbourhoods.

The area of this study is located between two very important spots of chemical Industrial areas in the port of Tarragona, in the northeast of Spain. Nearby these two industrial areas there are 3 fire stations. In this study, the firemen were trained to perform odour field inspections by means of an android app. In addition, the odour performance of the odour inspectors was also evaluated.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a control odor episodes system to detect outbreaks of smell in industrial areas that can generate situations of discomfort in the nearest residential areas. The study area and control are the two chemical parks and the port of Tarragona. These parks have 3 chemical fire stations (distributed one on each polygon and the other in the port). The staff of the chemicals parks has been trained to perform sensory inspections and olfactory capabilities of potential odor’s inspectors and they have been evaluated with the sensitivity kit of St. Croix Sensory'sTM which includes threshold detection level of n-butanol. Also, the ability of odor discrimination and identification was also assessed with the Sniffin’ Sticks from MedisenseTM. Finally, fire personnel have been trained in the use of field olfactometer Nasal RangerTM. The whole process of testing, training and control monitoring system is made from the Chemistry Technology Centre of Catalonia CTQC. Maintenance testing of olfactory capabilities and joint field studies between staff and CTQC chemical parks is periodically performed.

The developed system allows: the detection and correction of odor sources with impact on residential areas, tracking sporadic odor episodes and generating early warning for specific operations within the industrial environment. In the last 5 years the number of odor complaints has declined.
