CALPUFF and Odours Training Course Insights

calpuff odors courseThis time, organized the first specialist course on odour emission modelling with CALPUFF in collaboration with the Principal Scientist of Exponent Inc, Joseph Scire and the independent odour modeling specialist Jennifer Barclay. The course took place  the 22-25 October 2013 in Madrid, Spain and it consisted of a CALPUFF part developed along the first 3 days and an ODOUR part in the last day.

In the CALMET part, basic concepts such as the selection of the proper parameters TERRAD, RMAX1, RMAX2, R1, R2, BIAS and IEXTRP were widely discussed. In addition, the balance in the use of prognostic data (MM5, WRF, etc.) and observed data was commented.

In the CALPUFF part, there were some discussions on the use of barriers, near- and far-field algorithms, theory of puff advection, PRIME building downwash, coastal fumigation, sub-grid TIBL option, chemical transformation options (MESOPUFF, RIVAD/ARM3, ISORROPIA, etc.), deposition velocities, plume path coefficient adjustment, sidewall interaction and many, many other features included in the software.

In the evenings there were some hands-on exercise with the use of CALPUFF plot (for windows XP 16 bits only) and the newly developed CALAPP , a freely available software for windows 7 and 8 64 bits due to be released soon. is aware of the multiple issues and doubts that affect to odour modellers every day. To this effect we counted on the expertise of Jennifer Barclay, who exposed us some of the key parameters to be taken into account in complex terrains, coastal regions/ land-water boundaries, overwater transport, inhomogeneous dispersion conditions, stagnation (99% of odour complaints), flow reversals, recirculation, subhourly data management, selection of proper averaging times and peak to mean factors.

Jenny showed the user options for treating calms in CALPUFF, stagnation model analysis and advised against the use of AERMOD for odour modelling in any situation. Peak to mean factors used in Australasia were presented and discussed with the assistants, as well as the different options to input in the CALPUFF software for a proper odour modelling practise.

We all got a bit of the knowledge of Joseph Scire and Jennifer Barclay and I would like to thank them for their kindness and their help to make this course happen.Joe will get happier these days as the Boston Red Sox won their third World Series crown in this century.

Hope to repeat it again in another time.
