CEN TC264WG2 meeting BerlinThe 13th CEN meeting of Working Group 2 of the Technical Committee 264 'Air quality - Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry' took place in Berlin (Germany) at the end of August. The day 28th of August from 09:00 to 17:00 and the 29th from 09:00 to 13:00 a full review of the text was carried out by 19 experts from a few countries in Europe.

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) of Berlin was the place selected for the final review of the future EN 13725. After almost 5 years from the first meeting it is time to sum up the work and approve a final document. The ambitious aim set was to approve each and every of the clauses redacted. Was this goal reached?

Laura Capelli Odour Talks   In October 2016 we organized the first Odour Talks. The idea was to select key experts in several fields of odour management and to let them present a work of interest on the subject. To make this experience available to the rest of the world, we did a webcast online of the Talks. Some people subscribed to the webcast sessions and they could do online questions to the speakers. A few months after this experience, we have decided to make the videos available to everyone, so here you have an Odour Talk about the latest findings in the field of area source sampling by Ms Laura Capelli.

Laura Capelli is assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Her research activity is related to odour science and engineering, focusing especially on odour sampling, development of electronic noses for environmental air quality monitoring, dispersion modelling and characterization of odour emissions from different industrial activities. She has authored more than 100 papers in international journals and conferences.

Intensity vs. Odour Concentration

The terminological distinction between the quantities of stimulus and sensory effect is very important and leaves no room for misinterpretation of olfactometric results. The introduction of the odour level as a link between olfactory stimuli and effects will help to reach this objective.
