cen meeting wg41 nimes   The second meeting of the Working Group (WG) 41 that is dealing with the first European Norm that will regulate the so-called “e-noses” took place in Nimes, France, the 11th of February 2016. In this meeting the title of the norm was further discussed. The question raised was: sensors for monitoring odorants or odours?

Odorant? why not odour monitoring? A clear terminological distinction should be made between odorants (stimulus) and odour (sensation). In the same way that the olfactory system transduces chemical signals into perception (odours), the sensors "transduce" odorant signals into electric signals.

The first meeting of the Working Group (WG) 41 that is dealing with the first European standard that will regulate the so-called “e-noses” took place in Antwerp, Belgium the 22nd of October 2015. The name initially given to the standard was "Electronic sensors for odorant monitoring" but this is just a provisional title.

In January 2015 we published that a new proposal for a European Standard about electronic air monitoring of odorants with the so-called electronic noses (or e-noses) was filled. This WG was hosted inside the Technical Committee 264 on “Air Quality” and the appointed convenor was chosen to be Mr. Anton Philip van Harreveld.

enose   A new proposal for a European Norm about electronic air monitoring of odorants with the so-called electronic noses (or e-noses) have been recently filled. The 18th of December, the European Committee for Standardization sent a letter to all the people involved in the Technical Committee  dealing with Air Quality to comment on the adoption of a proposal with the tentative name "prEN xxxxx Air quality – Continuous instrumental odorant monitoring in air to assess risks of odour (nuisance) and safety".

This new work item proposal "Electronic nose" will be based on the Dutch Norm NTA 9055:2012 Air quality - Electronic air monitoring - Odour (nuisance) and safety (Luchtkwaliteit - Elektronische luchtmonitoring - Geur(overlast) en veiligheid).
